Eric Munsell holding his $200,000 Powerball® prize
Dedicated Fire-Fighting Grandfather Celebrates Surprise $200,000 Powerball® Win
May 04, 2017 -- Eric Munsell of Waterford has been serving the state of Connecticut for over 49 years as a Fire Fighter. Little did Munsell know that his amazing and committed service would be rewarded with a $200,000 Powerball prize!

Munsell told Lottery officials about the moment he won, “So I ran some errands and got to the counter at Stop & Shop. The cashier said, ‘I can’t cash this one.’ I said, ‘Why?’ I scanned [the ticket] a second time and it read $200,000! I figured it was a mistake. Of course there was a line of people behind me cheering! I made it out the door and immediately called my wife. She didn’t believe me!”

The Powerball winning numbers drawn on April 26 were ---- 1 – 15 – 18 – 26 – 51 – Powerball: 26. Munsell’s ticket matched 4 numbers and the Powerball. Munsell also purchased the Power Play® option and his prize was multiplied to $200,000. The numbers played were a combination of Munsell’s children’s and grandchildren’s birthdays.

Now a full-time instructor at the CT Fire Academy, Munsell works hard supporting and training active Fire Rescue personnel. “It’s all I’ve done. It’s been challenging—I enjoy it—been a pleasure.” After reflecting on his career and looking at his check, Munsell said that his win was, “Much needed!”

When asked about his plans for the winnings, Munsell smiled and said, “Pretty much bills and a motorcycle for my son.” With 5 children and 11 grandchildren, Munsell is excited to treat his family.

Munsell’s winning ticket was sold at Henny Penny #20 located on 45 Great Neck Road in Waterford.
