Portland Pop Wins Cash5 $100,000 Top Prize with His Family’s Birthday Numbers
Lino Cruz of Portland has been playing Cash5, the CT Lottery’s nightly draw game, for the past 20 years based on his family’s birthday numbers: 1-4-10-12-14. Cruz’s persistence finally paid off when all five of his Cash5
numbers were drawn on June 25th. The wait was definitely worth it—Cruz was one of two winners last night to win the game’s $100,000 top prize. In total, of 3,864 winning tickets were sold statewide, with prizes ranging in value $2 to $100,000 each.
“I’ve been close to winning [Cash5] with four numbers before, and just kept on playing,” Cruz told Lottery officials. “I was watching the news on TV this morning when they showed the Cash5 winning numbers… 1, 4, 10, 12, and 14. I thought, ‘Oh my God, am I seeing this right?’”
Cruz immediately went to his car to retrieve his Cash5 ticket and sure enough, the winning numbers were an exact match. “I woke up my wife and told her, ‘I hit it! I hit the Cash5 numbers.’ I showed her the ticket and then we checked the lottery’s website, just to be sure. We were screaming. We woke the whole family up…we all were screaming. It was a very, very happy event.”
“This [prize] is a blessing,” said Cruz, accompanied by his wife, Rose, at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill this morning. “We have three kids and all are in college. This will help us pay bills and get ahead.”
Cruz’s winning ticket was purchased at Moon Mart, located at 233 Main Street in Portland. For selling the $100,000 prize winning ticket, Moon Mart will receive a $1,000 selling bonus from the CT Lottery.
