October 10, 2012 -- While on a hunt for apples at his local grocery store, Broad Brook resident, Kris DeGrandi froze in his tracks upon hearing his wife, Kathleen, utter the words, “We won a million dollars!”

Kathleen had just verified at the customer service desk that their Powerball “Quick Pick” ticket for September 29, 2012 matched the first five numbers drawn 14 - 18 - 28 - 29 - 57, but missed the Powerball number, 8, for a $1,000,000 prize win.  Statewide, a total of 8,535 winning tickets were sold on that date with prizes ranging from $4 to $1,000,000.
 
“When the clerk scanned the ticket and told me we won big, I asked her, ‘How much?’  Kathleen told lottery officials.  “She said, ‘You can’t get your money here.  I think you won $1,000,000!’  I was in shock…it didn’t seem real,” Kathleen said.  “We never did finish our shopping,” added Kris, with a laugh.  “We signed the ticket immediately and left the cart right there.”

The DeGrandis arrived at CT Lottery headquarters last Friday to claim a prize check for $683,000 (value after taxes).  “This win is tremendous,” said Kris.  We’ll pay off the kid’s student loans, and the rest will help us stabilize our retirement.”

For selling the DeGrandis their $1,000,000 prize winning Powerball ticket, Stop & Shop, located at 1739 Ellington Road in South Windsor will receive a $2,000 bonus check from the CT Lottery.
