Walter Tourville Wins "Match 5" Powerball Prize on June 1st
Columbia Man Wins $200,000 Powerball Prize with a "Stroke of Luck"
June 06, 2011 --
On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, the Powerball
jackpot had amassed to an incredible $201,900,000 and Walter Tourville of Columbia, a self-employed house painter, purchased a few tickets with his own numbers, along with a couple “Quick Picks.” The next day, Tourville collected his tickets and checked them against the winning numbers drawn on that date—and discovered much to his amazement that he was a lucky $200,000 prize winner. “It took me a while to realize what I won. It wasn’t registering that I had five numbers,” Tourville told Lottery officials.
One of Tourville’s Quick Pick tickets successfully matched the first 5 numbers drawn in the June 1st Powerball game, 8 – 18 – 38 – 46 – 56, but missed having the Powerball number of 31. The Power Play multiplier was 4. Nationwide, 1,498,086 winning Powerball tickets were purchased on that date; 24,958 of those tickets were sold here in Connecticut.
Tourville said that when he located the Powerball “Match 5” prize payout on the CT Lottery website that the magnitude of his win finally registered. “It looked pretty good!” Tourville said laughing.
Tourville arrived at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill last week, with his lovely wife, Maribeth by his side, to claim a check for $137,000 (prize value after taxes). “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy,” Maribeth said. What will the Tourville’s do with their incredible win? “We’ll take care of some bills…pay off some debt, and be smart with the rest of it,” Tourville said.
Tourville purchased his Powerball Match 5 prize winning ticket at Smokers Discount World, located at 351 Boston Post Road in North Windham. Smokers Discount World will receive a $2,000 bonus check from the CT Lottery for selling the ticket.
