The CT Lottery began operating in 1972; we offered just one game. Since that time, we have greatly expanded our portfolio of lottery games. Instant fun and big prizes can be won on our scratch games. In 2012, the CT Lottery will celebrate 40 years of success. The CT Lottery has raised more than $7.2 BILLION for valuable programs and causes, such as education, libraries, public health, conservation services and public safety. Our financial success reflects sound business planning and a commitment to integrity. In our most recent fiscal year, July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011, the CT Lottery achieved record sales of $1.016 billion. We returned a record $289.3 million to the state’s General Fund. Players won a record $610 million, and payments to retailers were a record $59 million.
The Lottery is also good for CT’s communities and businesses. We support local economies by purchasing services and products from community resources whenever possible. Our partnership with nearly 3,000 retailers is equally important. The revenue our retailers earn from the sale of Lottery helps keep their stores profitable and their workforce stable.
Lottery tickets are a form of entertainment, and we work hard to market our products in a responsible manner. The Lottery contributes $1.5 million annually to help prevent and treat problem gambling. We have produced numerous public service announcements to educate CT citizens about problem gambling, especially to raise awareness that youth should not play our games. We are proud of our work, and we are dedicated to promoting responsible play.
As we focus on the future, our purpose will remain the same as it has always been: to raise revenue in an entrepreneurial manner for the State of Connecticut, consistent with the highest standards of good public policy and social responsibility, by offering products to our players that are fun and entertaining and by ensuring the public’s trust through integrity and honesty.
